The City of Alicante is the capital of the Spanish province with the same name. It is not a very large city (it has a population under 350,000) and that is why it may be a bit surprising that there is so much to see there. It is a very old city, packed with historical buildings and sights. The population of the city is very open to tourists, making all strangers feel like they are in a safe and comfortable place.
The city is located right next to Mount Bencantil, which you will undoubtedly want to climb to see one of the most beautiful castles in Europe, the Castle of Santa Barbara. Unfortunately, successive bombardments ruined quite a bit of it, but there is still enough to see to quench your thirst of history. Also, while visiting the mountain top castle, you are able to see the whole city of Alicante. Don’t forget to take a few pictures when you get there, so you can immortalize that image.
While in the city, take a walk on the Explanada de Espana, which is one of the most beautiful promenades Spain has to offer. L’Ereta and El Palmeral Parks should also be on your itinerary. They are located in very old areas of the city, and are as relaxing as any other park in the world. Among other places, you should also visit the Gothic Basilica of Santa Maria, the St. Nicholas of Bari Cathedral, the Monastery of Santa Fez, the Defence towers of Huerta de Alicante, the San Fernando Castle and the Gravina Palace. Some of these buildings are 500-600 years old, and many of the original elements are still there.
