The Spanish Island of Fuerteventura offers the most beautiful natural beaches of the Canary archipelago. The white and gold sand, which forms mile-long beaches, is bathed by a crystal clear sea which has a stunning turquoise colour. The island is perfect for those who enjoy nautical sports in general and windsurfing in particular. It is a great place to go with your entire family, as the sea is usually calm in most places. Even though more and more tourists head out to Fuerteventura every year, the island is still protected by visitor pressure.
The island of Fuerteventura spreads over a surface of 1661 square kilometers and it is located at the eastern end of the Canary Islands. The 115 km distance to the beaches of Morocco strongly influences the island’s climate. Fuerteventura is undoubtedly the driest but also the warmest of the Canaries. Not many people live there and the few locals are often busy with raising goats and producing the world famous Fuerteventura cheese. The island’s most important city is called Puberto del Rosario.
Most of the best beaches are located in the Jandia peninsula. There you will also find Morro Jable, a modern town which was built on a small fishers’ village. You will find many beautiful beaches but also countless shops, restaurants and bars. The Sotavento beach has become a Mecca for windsurfers, as there is always plenty of good wind there. If you are not familiar with the sport, this would be a great place to learn.
The northern region of the island also has something to offer. Here you will find the protected area of El Jable. It is a 20 square km area filled with dunes of sands. You will find some of the most impressive beaches there. Another protected area is the tiny island of Los Lobos which is located extremely close to northern Fuerteventura. If you travel inside the island you will find the small town of Bentacuria, which is more than 600 years old, has an incredible cathedral and was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.
