Car Hire Las Palmas — Gateway to Gran Canaria’s Diverse Landscapes

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria combines a sophisticated colonial old town, one of Europe’s best urban beaches, and excellent access to Gran Canaria’s extraordinary variety of landscapes. Within an hour’s drive, you can travel from subtropical coastline to pine-forested mountains, from golden dunes to green valleys. Hiring a car in Las Palmas lets you experience all of this—from the famous Maspalomas dunes to the hidden beaches of the rugged north coast.

Gran Canaria is often called a “miniature continent” for its range of microclimates and landscapes. The south offers year-round sunshine and tourist resorts; the north is greener and more traditional; the mountainous interior offers hiking and stunning viewpoints. A rental car transforms Las Palmas from a city beach holiday into a comprehensive island exploration.

Picking Up Your Rental Car in Las Palmas

Gran Canaria Airport (LPA), also known as Las Palmas Airport, sits 20km south of the city. All major international companies operate here with extensive fleets. The airport is efficient—most rentals are processed within 20-30 minutes.

City locations include offices in Las Palmas centre and at the port. If you’re arriving by ferry from other islands, city pickup may be convenient.

Required documents: Valid driving licence, passport or ID, and credit card. EU licence holders don’t need an International Driving Permit; non-EU visitors should check requirements.

Peak season: Gran Canaria is a year-round destination, but December-February and July-August see highest demand. Book ahead for these periods.

Where to Go with Your Rental Car from Las Palmas

Las Canteras Beach (in the city)

One of Europe’s best urban beaches—a 3km stretch of golden sand protected by a natural reef. The beachfront promenade offers restaurants, shops, and surf schools. Walkable from the city centre.

Vegueta Old Town (in the city)

The colonial centre with the cathedral, Columbus House museum, and narrow streets. The historic quarter is walkable and deserves a few hours.

Maspalomas Dunes (60km, 45min)

The famous sand dunes of Maspalomas create a Sahara-like landscape beside the sea. The adjacent beach and lighthouse are iconic. The dunes are protected—stay on marked paths.

Tejeda and Roque Nublo (40km, 50min)

A mountain village in a dramatic setting beneath the iconic Roque Nublo rock formation. The drive offers spectacular views. The village has excellent restaurants and a botanical garden.

Puerto de Mogán (70km, 1hr)

A charming fishing village often called “Little Venice” for its canals and flower-filled bridges. Very different from the package-resort south. Excellent seafood restaurants.

Tips for Driving in Gran Canaria

Roads: Main roads are excellent, including mountain routes. The GC-1 motorway connects Las Palmas to the south efficiently. Mountain roads are winding but well-maintained.

Speed limits: 50km/h in built-up areas, 90km/h on open roads, 120km/h on motorways.

Driving style: Spanish drivers are generally courteous. Tourist traffic can be heavy in the south.

Parking: Las Palmas has paid parking in the centre. Beach parking fills in peak season at popular spots.

Fuel: Stations are plentiful. Fill up before heading into remote mountain areas.

Weather: The north can be cloudy while the south is sunny. Pack layers—mountain areas can be significantly cooler than the coast.
