Car Hire Lisbon Airport — Start Your Portuguese Adventure Here

Humberto Delgado Airport sits just 7 kilometres from Lisbon’s city centre, making it one of Europe’s most convenient major airports for picking up a rental car. Within 30 minutes of landing, you can be on the motorway heading to Sintra’s palaces, the beaches of Cascais, or the vineyards of Setúbal. Portugal’s compact size means everything feels close, and a car transforms a Lisbon trip into a proper Portuguese exploration.

The airport itself is surprisingly manageable for a capital city hub. Two terminals handle the traffic—Terminal 1 for most international flights, Terminal 2 for low-cost carriers. The rental desks cluster in Terminal 1’s arrivals area, with the budget operators mostly in the dedicated car rental building a short walk away.

Picking Up Your Rental Car at Lisbon Airport

All the major brands are here: Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, Budget, plus Portuguese favourites like Guerin and Turisprime. The desks are on the ground floor of Terminal 1, with the cars parked in garages either connected to the terminal or a 5-minute shuttle ride.

Here’s what makes Lisbon different from other European airports: the queues can be genuinely long during summer mornings, when dozens of flights from northern Europe land between 6am and 10am. If you’re arriving then, book with a premium provider or consider paying for fast-track pickup. Budget providers often have the longest waits.

Driving out is straightforward—follow signs for the 2ª Circular ring road or the A1 motorway. The airport is well-connected to the main road network, and within 10 minutes you’re on routes heading north, south, or west to the coast.

Where to Go with Your Rental Car from Lisbon

Sintra (30 minutes): UNESCO-listed magical town with the Pena Palace, Moorish Castle, and Quinta da Regaleira. Park at the train station or one of the designated lots—the town centre is narrow and congested.

Cascais (30 minutes): Former fishing village turned elegant resort, with beautiful beaches, a marina, and the dramatic Boca do Inferno cliff formation. Easy drive along the coast road.

Óbidos (1 hour): A perfectly preserved medieval walled town. Walk the walls, try the ginjinha (cherry liqueur) served in chocolate cups, and explore the narrow streets. Parking is outside the walls.

Fátima (1.5 hours): Portugal’s most famous pilgrimage site. Even if you’re not religious, the scale of the basilica and the atmosphere are impressive.

Setúbal/Arrábida (45 minutes): Outstanding natural park with hidden beaches, hiking trails, and excellent seafood restaurants. The drive over Arrábida mountain offers spectacular views.

Tips for Driving in Portugal

Portugal uses electronic tolls on most major motorways. You can pay with a card at toll booths, but some roads use automatic number plate recognition—you’ll need to settle up online or at a post office before returning the car. Many rental companies offer a toll transponder for a daily fee.

Speed limits: 120km/h on motorways, 90km/h on open roads, 50km/h in towns. Portuguese drivers are aggressive by northern European standards but generally predictable. Stay right unless overtaking.

Parking in Lisbon centre is difficult and expensive. Use underground public lots—they’re marked with a blue P and cost €2-3 per hour. Never park in residents-only spots (gray markings). Fines are steep and rental companies add admin fees.

Fuel is pricier than in Spain. Supermarket stations (BP, Galp) are cheaper than motorway stops. Diesel (gasóleo) is common for rentals.
