Car Hire Mackay Airport Queensland | Cheap Mackay Rental Cars

Mackay sits on the Queensland coast about 300km north of Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays. The city has its own airport with flights from Brisbane, and it’s increasingly popular as an alternative gateway to the Whitsundays – often cheaper than flying into Proserpine. The surrounding region has sugar cane fields, rainforests, and the chance to see platypus in the wild, making it worth more than just a quick stop.
While many people simply pass through Mackay on their way to the Whitsundays, the area has its own attractions worth exploring. Eungella National Park is one of Queensland’s hidden gems – the drive takes you into the Pioneer Valley and up to the park, where ancient rainforests and the chance of spotting platypus make it worthwhile. Having a car also means you can stock up on supplies in Mackay before heading to the more expensive tourist towns of the Whitsundays.
Mackay’s main street has some nice heritage buildings and good cafes. The Mackay Marina has restaurants and a seafood market. The Bluewater Lagoon is a free swimming spot in the city centre with views over the Pioneer River.

Eungella National Park is the big draw. It’s about 80km west of Mackay and sits on the Clarke Range. The drive follows the Pioneer River through sugar cane country and then climbs into rainforest. The Broken River circuit is the best walk for spotting platypus – they’re most active early morning and late afternoon. Allow at least half a day for the park.

Cape Hillsborough is an hour’s drive north of Mackay. The beach has a resident population of eastern grey kangaroos that come down to the beach at sunrise – a popular sight for photographers. The nearby Sandspit offers access to the Whitsunday Islands by ferry.
The drive from Mackay to Airlie Beach (Whitsundays) takes about 1.5 hours via the Bruce Highway and Shute Harbour Road. Roads are generally in good condition. The road to Eungella is sealed but winding – allow extra time and drive carefully. Fuel up in Mackay as service stations can be sparse in the ranges. Roads in the national park are unsealed in places but manageable with a standard car.
Mackay Airport has car rental desks in the terminal. Booking ahead is recommended during Queensland school holidays when demand is high. Consider whether you need a 4WD – standard vehicles handle most roads, but if you’re planning to explore remote beaches or national park tracks, a 4WD offers more flexibility. Off-airport rental locations in Mackay city sometimes offer better rates.
