Car Hire Menorca — Discover the Balearics’ Quietest Island

Menorca, the quietest of the Balearic Islands, offers something its neighbours cannot: peace. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993, the island has resisted mass development, preserving a landscape of pristine beaches, prehistoric monuments, and traditional farming villages. Hiring a car in Menorca is essential—the island’s treasures are scattered around its perimeter, and public transport reaches only the main towns.

What makes Menorca special is the quality of its beaches. Over 100 beaches and coves ring the island, from long sandy stretches to tiny calas accessible only by foot or boat. The north coast beaches are wilder with darker sand; the south coast offers fine white sand and turquoise water. Many beaches are protected, with no development behind them—just pine forests reaching to the sand. A rental car lets you discover these hidden corners.

Picking Up Your Rental Car in Menorca

Menorca Airport (MAH) sits 5km southwest of Mahón. All major companies operate here, plus local specialists. Summer demand is high—book ahead for July-August.

Port locations in Mahón serve ferry arrivals from Barcelona and Palma. Book ahead if arriving by ferry.

Required documents: Valid driving licence, passport or ID, and credit card. EU licence holders don’t need an International Driving Permit; non-EU visitors should check requirements.

Where to Go with Your Rental Car in Menorca

Mahón (Maó)

The capital with one of the world’s largest natural harbours. The Georgian architecture reflects British influence. Excellent restaurants, a distillery (Xoriguer gin), and boat trips around the harbour.

Ciutadella (45km, 45min)

The former capital with a beautiful old town, medieval architecture, and a charming port. The cathedral and narrow streets deserve exploration. Very different atmosphere from Mahón.

Calas of the South Coast (various distances)

White sand and turquoise water: Cala Macarella, Cala Mitjana, Cala en Turqueta. Protected beaches with limited facilities. Arrive early in peak season—parking fills quickly.

Beaches of the North Coast (various distances)

Wilder, darker sand, fewer crowds: Playa de Cavallería, Cala Pregonda, Cala Presili. Beautiful walking trails connect some beaches.

Prehistoric Sites

Menorca has over 1,500 prehistoric monuments. The Talaiotic sites at Torre d’en Galmés and Naveta des Tudons offer insights into an ancient civilisation. Accessible by car.

Tips for Driving in Menorca

Roads: The main road (ME-1) connects Mahón and Ciutadella efficiently. Roads to beaches can be narrow and winding. Some beach access requires unpaved roads—check your rental agreement.

Speed limits: 50km/h in built-up areas, 80km/h on open roads (lower than mainland Spain).

Driving style: Menorca is relaxed compared to Ibiza or Mallorca. The island is small—you’ll rarely exceed 70km/h.

Parking: Beach parking fills by 10-11am in July-August at popular calas. Arrive early or visit late afternoon. Some beaches require walking from parking areas.

Fuel: Stations are in Mahón, Ciutadella, and a few other towns. Fill up before heading to remote beaches.

Seasonal note: Many beach car parks charge fees in summer. Carry small bills.
