Car Hire Paris CDG Airport — Start Your French Journey Right

Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) is France’s largest airport and one of Europe’s busiest hubs, handling over 76 million passengers annually. Located 25 km northeast of Paris, it’s the ideal pickup point for exploring northern France. Skip the RER train into the city and drive directly to your destination — whether that’s Paris, Champagne, Normandy, or Belgium. The A1 and A104 motorways connect CDG to the entire Île-de-France region and beyond.

CDG has three terminals (1, 2, and 3) connected by free shuttle buses and the CDGVAL automated train. Terminal 2 is the largest, divided into seven sub-terminals (2A-2G). Car rental counters are in each terminal, making pickup convenient regardless of your arrival point. As a major international hub, CDG offers competitive rates and extensive fleet selection.

Picking Up Your Rental Car at Paris CDG Airport

Terminal 1 car rental counters are in the arrival hall, Level 5. Terminal 2 counters are in the arrival hall of each sub-terminal (2A-2G). Terminal 3 is smaller but has counters for major providers. Companies include Sixt, Europcar, Hertz, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, National, Alamo, and French chains like Ada, Rent A Car, and GoldCar. Most are open 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM, with some offering 24-hour service.

Pickup garages are connected to each terminal by walkways or shuttles. Vehicle return is clearly signposted — follow “Restitution Voitures de Location” signs. Fuel stations are located at each terminal. Fill up before returning to avoid surcharges (€2-3 per litre over market price).

Documentation: valid driving licence (EU/EEA or International Driving Permit for others), passport or ID card, and credit card for deposit (€500-1,500). CDG handles international travellers daily — expect efficient service but strict documentation checks.

Where to Go from Paris CDG Airport

Paris City Centre (45 minutes) — Take the A1 south toward Paris. Avoid rush hours (7-9 AM, 5-7 PM) when the A1 and Périphérique can gridlock. Parking in central Paris is expensive — use Park & Ride or hotels with parking.

Parc Astérix (20 minutes) — North on the A1. This theme park based on the Asterix comics is a great family destination. Book tickets online for discounts.

Champagne Region (1.5 hours) — East on the A4 toward Reims. Tour champagne houses, visit the cathedral, and enjoy the vineyards. Perfect for a day trip or weekend.

Normandy (2.5 hours) — West on the A13 and A13. D-Day beaches, Mont Saint-Michel (3 hours), and coastal towns await. A moving and beautiful region.

Belgium (2 hours) — North on the A1 and continue to Brussels or Bruges. Check your rental agreement for cross-border permissions.

Tips for Driving in France

CDG connects to the A1 (Paris to Lille), A104 (Francilienne ring road), and A3 (Paris suburbs). The A1 leads directly into Paris or north toward Belgium. Speed limits are 50 km/h in cities, 80 km/h on rural roads, and 130 km/h on motorways (110 km/h in rain). The Priorité à droite rule applies at some intersections — yield to traffic from the right unless signs indicate otherwise.

French motorways (autoroutes) are toll roads. Have cash or credit card ready at péage booths. Fuel is cheaper at supermarkets than at autoroute service stations. Plan your refuelling stops accordingly.

Paris has a low-emission zone (ZFE) requiring a Crit’Air sticker for central areas. Rental cars should have this; confirm before driving into Paris. The Périphérique ring road can be chaotic — stay in the right lane if exiting, use the left lane for through traffic.
