Car Hire Rethymno

Hire a Car in Rethymno and Unlock Western Crete

Rethymno sits almost exactly halfway between Chania and Heraklion, but it is more than a midpoint. The old town is a labyrinth of Venetian and Ottoman architecture where restaurants occupy sixteenth-century arcades and the harbour is guarded by a fortress that held out against pirates and invaders for centuries. Beyond the city, Crete opens up: gorges that cut through the mountains, beaches that range from busy resort strips to hidden coves accessible only by rough tracks, and villages where the local dialect still carries traces of ancient Greek.

A rental car is essential for seeing more than the immediate coastline. The north-coast highway connects Rethymno to both larger cities, but the real interest lies on the mountain roads heading south and the smaller coastal routes that branch off to fishing settlements and monastery complexes. Crete is a big island; without your own wheels you are limited to organised tours and infrequent buses.

Car rental offices are scattered along the approach roads into Rethymno and near the university district. The city centre itself is pedestrian-friendly but parking is competitive; the municipal lot near the port is the most reliable option. For airport arrivals, Heraklion is closer than Chania, though both are served by the north-coast highway.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT PICKUP

Match collection to the actual itinerary

Include transfers, parking days, opening hours and return timing when comparing the two options.

OPTION ONE

City Centre Collection for Old Town Stays

If you are staying in or near the old town, collecting in Rethymno itself avoids the need to drive in from the outskirts. Several offices sit on the main roads just outside the pedestrian zone. The advantage is immediate access to your accommodation; the trade-off is that city traffic can be slow in peak season and parking near the collection point may be limited.

OPTION TWO

Hotel Delivery for Resort Stays

Many visitors stay in the beach resorts east and west of Rethymno centre. Some rental suppliers offer hotel delivery for a modest fee, saving you a taxi into town and back. This is particularly useful for families with luggage or those staying in the large resort complexes along the coastal strip. Confirm the delivery radius when booking.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Plan the handover, price and first drive

Rethymno's history is written in its buildings. The Venetians ruled here for centuries and left a fortified harbour, a loggia, and a cathedral that became a mosque. The Ottomans added their own mosques and public baths, some of which survive as museums or restaurants. The result is a city where you can eat dinner in a building that has served as a Venetian warehouse, an Ottoman bathhouse, and a modern taverna.

The Fortezza dominates everything. Built after a pirate raid destroyed the city in the sixteenth century, it sits on the headland above the old town and was designed to withstand siege and storm. It never faced a serious attack, which is why it remains so intact; instead it served as a prison, a refugee camp, and eventually an open-air concert venue.

Crete's interior is often invisible to coastal visitors. The White Mountains and Psiloritis rise behind the north shore, and the valleys between them hold villages that were isolated until the 1970s. The Amari Valley is one of these places: a landscape of olive groves and cypress trees where the traditional diet still dominates and the church frescoes date to the thirteenth century.

The south coast is different again. Where the north is developed and busy, the south faces the Libyan Sea and feels wilder. Preveli is the most famous beach, but there are others: Triopetra with its three rocks, Agios Pavlos with its sand dunes, the monastery beaches near Plakias. All are easier with a car than with the limited bus service that runs from Rethymno in summer.

COMPARE THE CONTRACT

Check the conditions behind the price

The selected supplier’s terms and booking voucher control the rental. Review them before payment and again before collection.

Total payable price

Compare the full payable amount and inclusions rather than an unsupported daily-price promise.

Deposit and payment card

Confirm the deposit, accepted card type and whose name must appear on the card.

Excess and cover

Read the renter's liability, exclusions and what any optional protection actually changes.

Fuel policy

Know the collection level, return requirement and whether a refuelling charge can apply.

Mileage and territory

Check any distance limit and where the vehicle may be driven.

Extras and return

Price additional drivers, seats, after-hours service and one-way return before payment.

VEHICLE CHOICE

Choose for people, bags and roads

A category normally represents a group of similar cars, not a promise of one exact model.

  • Compact: convenient for couples and tighter parking.
  • Intermediate: more room for bags and longer journeys.
  • Family or SUV category: useful only when the required capacity justifies it.
  • Transmission: select automatic explicitly if manual is unsuitable.
ON THE ROAD

Practical planning before departure

Driving South to the Gorges

The road south from Rethymno crosses the island through the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, a dramatic descent with waterfalls and sheer rock faces. The route is paved but demands concentration; sharp bends and local buses require defensive driving. The reward is access to Preveli Beach and the palm forest, plus the mountain villages of the Amari Valley.

Navigating the North Coast Highway

The EO90 highway runs the length of Crete's north coast and is your main artery. It is modern and fast but can be busy with trucks and coaches. Keep to the right lane unless overtaking, and watch for vehicles entering from side roads. Fuel stations are frequent but not universal; fill up before heading into the mountains.

ROUTE IDEAS

Build a realistic first journey

Rethymno to Preveli and the South Coast

Drive south through the Kourtaliotiko Gorge to reach Preveli, where a river flows through a palm forest to meet the sea. This is one of Crete's signature beaches and fills early in summer. The route itself is worth the trip, with views of the Libyan Sea from the high passes.

Rethymno to Chania

Head west along the north coast to Crete's most beautiful city. The Venetian harbour, old town, and surrounding Akrotiri peninsula with its monasteries and beaches make for a full day. The drive is straightforward but can be busy; allow extra time for traffic near Platanias.

Rethymno to Spili and the Amari Valley

Inland and south lies a network of villages in the Amari Valley, centred on Spili with its Venetian fountain and traditional tavernas. This is Crete without the crowds: olive groves, Byzantine churches, and mountain roads that feel remote despite the island's popularity. A good option for a slower-paced day.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an SUV for Crete?

Not for the main roads. A standard car handles the north coast highway and most mountain routes. Only the roughest tracks to remote beaches require high clearance, and rental agreements usually exclude these anyway.

Is parking easy at Rethymno old town?

No. The old town streets are narrow and mostly pedestrianised. Use the municipal car park near the port, which is affordable and secure, then walk in. Avoid trying to drive into the old town itself.

Can I drive from Rethymno to Knossos in a day?

Yes, but it is a long day. Knossos is near Heraklion, a route whose timing depends on traffic and conditions east. Combine it with Heraklion's archaeological museum for a full itinerary, or break the journey at villages along the way.
