Car Hire Ballina Airport NSW | Cheap Ballina Rental Cars

Ballina Airport serves the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales and is the most convenient airport for visitors heading to Byron Bay. While Byron has its own small airport, Ballina often has cheaper flights and more airline options. The airport is about 30 minutes’ drive from Byron Bay, and all major car rental companies have desks there. It’s a small, easy-to-navigate airport that gets you quickly onto the Pacific Highway.
Ballina and Byron Bay are both coastal destinations where having a car makes a huge difference. Public transport is limited and taxis are expensive. With your own vehicle you can explore the Northern Rivers properly – from the beaches around Byron to the hinterland villages, waterfalls and the food scene that this region is increasingly known for. You’re also on the Pacific Highway, so day trips to places like the Gold Coast or even Brisbane are doable.
Byron Bay needs no introduction – its lighthouse, beaches, and alternative culture draw visitors from around the world. The main beach is popular with families while The Pass and Wategos are favourites with surfers. The Cape Byron Lighthouse walk is a must-do, offering views that regularly appear on Instagram.

Lennox Head is a short drive south and has a more laid-back village feel. The headland at Pat Morton Lookout offers sweeping ocean views. Lake Ainsworth, behind the beach, is a tea-tree stained lake that’s popular for swimming.

The hinterland is worth exploring. Bangalow is a pretty village with good cafes and boutiques, while Mullumbimby has a strong alternative community vibe. The Minyon Falls in Nightcap National Park are a 45-minute drive from Byron and make a great day trip.
The drive from Ballina Airport to Byron Bay takes 30-40 minutes via the Pacific Highway (M1) and Bangalow Road. Traffic can be heavy during school holidays and around peak times. Within Byron itself, parking can be difficult and expensive – consider using the public car park at the station and walking or cycling. Speed limits are 50km/h in towns and 100km/h on open roads.
Ballina Airport car rental desks are located in the terminal. Book ahead during peak periods (school holidays, Splendour in the Grass, Byron Bay Bluesfest) as availability is limited. Consider whether you need a larger vehicle – the hinterland roads are generally good but some tracks require 4WD. If you plan to visit multiple beaches, a small car is easier to park.
