Agios Nikolaos to Ierapetra and the South Coast
Head south through the mountains to Ierapetra, the southernmost town in Europe, facing the Libyan Sea and Africa beyond. The route crosses the island's spine and offers completely different scenery from the north coast: drier, warmer, and less developed. Ierapetra itself has a long beach and a fort built by Venetian occupiers.
Agios Nikolaos to Heraklion
The westward drive to Crete's capital is fast on the highway but can be busy with trucks and tourist traffic.
