Car Hire Amsterdam — Your Gateway to the Netherlands

Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most visited cities — canals, museums, cycling culture, and a relaxed atmosphere. But beyond the city, the Netherlands unfolds: windmills at Zaanse Schans, tulip fields in spring, historic towns like Haarlem and Utrecht, and easy access to Belgium and Germany. A rental car here transforms Amsterdam from a city break into a Dutch adventure. Within 30 minutes, you can be at the coast. Within an hour, any major Dutch city.

However, driving in central Amsterdam is not recommended. Narrow streets, extensive bike lanes, trams, and expensive parking make city driving stressful. If you’re staying in Amsterdam and exploring the city only, use public transport, bikes, or walking. If you’re heading out for day trips or onward journeys, pick up your rental car at an airport or a location outside the city centre.

Picking Up Your Rental Car in Amsterdam

City pickup locations include Amsterdam Central Station, Amstel Station, and various locations in the business district (Zuidas). Most offices open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 6 PM, with limited Saturday hours. Sunday openings are rare. Consider Schiphol Airport pickup for better hours and easier motorway access. Parking in central Amsterdam is extremely expensive (€5-7/hour) — use Park & Ride on the outskirts.

Documentation: valid driving licence (EU/EEA licence or International Driving Permit for others), passport or ID card, and credit card for deposit (€500-1,500). Amsterdam locations handle international travellers daily.

Tips for Driving in the Netherlands

Driving is on the right. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h on rural roads, and 100-130 km/h on motorways (most are limited to 100 km/h). Dutch drivers are disciplined but fast — stay right except when overtaking.

Amsterdam has extensive bike lanes — watch for cyclists constantly, especially when turning right. Trams have priority in the city. Do NOT park on bike lanes — fines are heavy.

Parking in central Amsterdam is among the most expensive in Europe. Use Park & Ride facilities at the edge of the city (€1-8/day including public transport). The A10 ring road connects to all major motorways.

Motorways are mostly free. Fuel is expensive — fill up at supermarket stations (Albert Heijn, Jumbo) for better prices. Some tunnels charge fees (e.g., Noordtunnel on the A15).
