Utrecht Car Hire

Medieval Canals & Castle Country

Car Hire Utrecht – The Heart of the Netherlands

Utrecht is the most underrated city in the Netherlands. It has the oldest university in the country, the tallest church tower, and a canal system that is older than Amsterdam's — yet it receives a fraction of the visitors. The Oudegracht canal runs through the city centre, lined with medieval wharf cellars that have been converted into cafés, restaurants and shops. You can sit at water level with your feet almost touching the canal, watching boats pass by. It is one of the most atmospheric dining experiences in the country. A rental car in Utrecht puts you at the geographical centre of the Netherlands, with Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and the Veluwe national park all within reach.

Utrecht's location makes it an ideal base for exploring the country. Amsterdam is to the north-west, with its museums and canals. The Hague and Rotterdam are to the south-west, with government grandeur and modern architecture. The Hoge Veluwe national park, with its heathlands, forests and the Kröller-Müller Museum, is to the east. And the region around Utrecht itself is dotted with castles, including Kasteel de Haar, the largest castle in the Netherlands, and Slot Zuylen, a medieval fort on the Vecht River.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT PICKUP

Match collection to the actual itinerary

Include transfers, parking days, opening hours and return timing when comparing the two options.

OPTION ONE

Walk the canals, drive the countryside

Utrecht's historic centre is compact and best explored on foot. The Dom Tower, the Oudegracht wharves and the university quarter are all within walking distance. Park at your hotel and use the car for trips to the castles, national parks and other cities of the region.

OPTION TWO

Explore the castles and the coast

The area around Utrecht has more castles than any other part of the Netherlands. Kasteel de Haar, with its moat and formal gardens, is the largest. Slot Zuylen is smaller but equally charming. Both are within driving distance, as are the beaches of the west coast.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Plan the handover, price and first drive

Utrecht's history is written in its canals. The Oudegracht, the old canal, was dug in the twelfth century and lined with wharves that served the medieval trade of the city. Today those wharves have been transformed into a unique strip of cafés, restaurants and boutiques, each with a terrace at water level. On summer evenings the terraces fill with students, locals and the occasional tourist who has discovered that Amsterdam is not the only canal city in the Netherlands.

The Dom Tower dominates the skyline. At 112 metres it is the tallest church tower in the country, and the climb to the top is worth the effort. The tower was part of a cathedral that was destroyed by a tornado in 1674, and the surviving Gothic transept now stands separate from the tower, creating one of the most unusual church squares in Europe.

Utrecht University gives the city its energy. With over thirty thousand students, the city has a youthful, international atmosphere. The university quarter is filled with eats, vintage shops and music venues. The botanical garden, the Hortus Botanicus, is one of the oldest in the country and still serves as a research garden.

Beyond the city, the landscape opens into the Dutch countryside. Castles dot the horizon, including Kasteel de Haar with its fairy-tale turrets and Slot Zuylen with its medieval moat. The Hoge Veluwe national park offers heathlands, forests and cycling trails, with the Kröller-Müller Museum housing a world-class collection of Van Gogh paintings. Utrecht is the centre of the Netherlands in every sense — geographical, cultural and historical.

  • Family or SUV category: useful only when the required capacity justifies it.
  • Transmission: select automatic explicitly if manual is unsuitable.
ON THE ROAD

Practical planning before departure

Driving in Utrecht

The Netherlands drives on the right. The A2, A12 and A27 motorways connect Utrecht to Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and the German border. Roads are excellent and toll-free. City-centre traffic is heaviest during weekday rush hours.

Parking in the centre

The historic centre has narrow streets and limited parking. Garages are available near the Dom Tower and the station. Many hotels offer parking for guests. Consider using the car only for trips outside the city.

Fuel and payment

Petrol stations are common on major routes. Most accept cards; some smaller stations prefer cash. No vignettes or motorway tolls are required in the Netherlands.

ROUTE IDEAS

Build a realistic first journey

Utrecht to Amsterdam

Take the A2 north-west for the Dutch capital. Amsterdam's museums, canals and nightlife are the main draws. City-centre driving is challenging; consider parking at a P+R and using public transport for the final approach.

Utrecht to Kasteel de Haar

Drive west to the largest castle in the Netherlands. The neo-Gothic building is surrounded by a moat, formal gardens and a park designed in English landscape style. The interior is furnished with period pieces and art collections.

Utrecht to Hoge Veluwe

Head east for the national park of heathlands, forests and sand dunes. The Kröller-Müller Museum, inside the park, holds the second-largest Van Gogh collection in the world. Free white bicycles are provided for exploring the park's cycling trails.
