Car Hire Florence — Renaissance Art Meets Tuscan Hills

Florence (Firenze) is the cradle of the Renaissance — the Uffizi, David, Duomo, and Ponte Vecchio draw millions each year. But beyond the city, Tuscany unfolds like a Renaissance painting: rolling hills, cypress trees, medieval hill towns, and world-class wine. A rental car here transforms Florence from a city break into a Tuscan adventure. Within 45 minutes, you can be in the Chianti hills. Within 90 minutes, Siena or San Gimignano. The A1 motorway connects Florence to all of Italy.

Driving in central Florence is not recommended. The ZTL (limited traffic zone) covers most of the historic centre, and cameras are automatic. But for regional travel — Chianti, Siena, the Val d’Orcia — a rental car is essential. Pick up outside the centre or at the airport, and use Florence as your base for exploring Tuscany.

Picking Up Your Rental Car in Florence

City pickup locations are near Santa Maria Novella station (the main hub) and in the Via Pisana area. Most offices open Monday through Saturday, 8 AM to 6 PM, with limited Sunday hours. Florence Airport (FLR) is 4 km northwest and offers longer hours — consider airport pickup for convenience. Parking in central Florence is nearly impossible. Use garages (€20-30/day) outside the ZTL zone or stay outside the centre.

Documentation: valid driving licence (International Driving Permit recommended for non-EU licences), passport or ID card, and credit card for deposit (€500-1,500). Italian rental companies inspect vehicles carefully. Photograph your car before driving off.

Where to Go with Your Rental Car in Florence

Chianti Region (45 minutes) — South on the SR222 (Chiantigiana). Vineyards, hill towns, and wine tastings. Greve, Castellina, and Gaiole are key stops. The road itself is stunning.

Siena (1.5 hours) — South on the A1 and RA6. The medieval centre, Piazza del Campo, and Duomo. A must-visit Tuscan city.

San Gimignano (1 hour) — Southwest on the A1 and SR431. Medieval towers rise from the hills. The “Manhattan of Tuscany” is unforgettable.

Pisa (1 hour) — West on the A11. The Leaning Tower and Piazza dei Miracoli. Combine with Lucca for a full day.

Val d’Orcia (2 hours) — South on the A1 and SR146. UNESCO-listed landscape of cypress, hills, and villages. Montalcino and Pienza are highlights.

Tips for Driving in Italy

Florence connects to the A1 (north-south, Milan to Rome) and A11 (west to Pisa and Lucca). The SR222 (Chiantigiana) is a scenic alternative through Chianti. Speed limits are 50 km/h in cities, 90 km/h on rural roads, and 130 km/h on motorways. Tuscan back roads are narrow and winding — drive carefully.

Italian motorways are toll roads. Expect €5-15 for medium journeys. Credit cards are accepted. Fuel is cheaper at supermarkets than on autostrade.

Florence has extensive ZTL zones in the historic centre. Do NOT drive into the centre. Fines are automatic and will find you via your rental company. Park outside and walk or use buses.

Use the search above to compare Florence car hire prices. Whether you’re exploring Chianti or heading to Siena, a rental car gives you freedom to discover Tuscany.
