Compact Car

Fukuoka was my entry point to Kyushu, and I quickly learned that this island marches to its own rhythm. The city itself is relaxed by Japanese standards—people eat ramen at sidewalk stalls, drink shochu in open-air bars, and seem genuinely friendly to strangers. I picked up a rental car and drove east toward Beppu.
The road to the hot spring town crossed mountains where steam rose from vents in the earth. Beppu itself was a carnival of thermal activity—public baths, foot baths in the street, and the famous hells where boiling water runs in unnatural colours. I soaked in an outdoor bath at midnight, watching steam rise into a sky full of stars.
Mount Aso was the trip's geological highlight. The caldera is so large it has its own climate. I drove across grasslands where wild horses galloped, then up to the crater rim where sulphur clouds drifted across a lunar landscape. The last eruption had been only months before. Standing at the edge, I understood why the ancient Japanese considered this a sacred place.
Kyushu does not have the polished tourism of Kyoto or Tokyo. It has something better—authenticity. The ramen shop owner who remembers your order, the farmer who waves from his field, the onsen where you are the only foreigner. A rental car is how you find these moments.

Beppu and Yufuin
Japan's hot spring capital is a drive across northern Kyushu. Beppu offers dramatic thermal viewing areas while Yufuin provides a refined onsen experience in a mountain valley setting. Stay overnight in a ryokan for the full hot spring experience.
Mount Aso
The world's largest active caldera is one of Kyushu's geological wonders. The drive crosses volcanic grasslands where horses roam freely. Check volcanic activity warnings before visiting, as the central crater sometimes closes to visitors due to gas emissions.
