Car Hire Kalamata | From €14/day | 365 Car Hire

Kalamata is the heart of the Peloponnese — a proper Greek city with a real local life, not just a tourist resort. It’s also the perfect base for exploring some of Greece’s most dramatic landscapes. The Mani peninsula with its tower houses, hidden coves along the Messenian Gulf, and ancient sites that most travellers only see on package tours. Hiring a car here gives you access to all of it, without the crowds of more famous destinations.

Getting Around Kalamata by Car

Kalamata has an international airport that gets busy in summer, and car rental desks are at the terminal and in town. The city itself is manageable on foot for the historic centre, seafront, and main markets. But the real magic starts when you drive out.

The road network around Kalamata is excellent by Greek standards. The main coastal road heads west towards Kardamili and the Mani — one of the most scenic drives in Greece. Inland roads lead to Mystras and Sparta. Roads are generally well-signed, though a GPS helps for the smaller villages.

Parking in Kalamata centre can be tight in summer, but the large municipal car park near the port is affordable and convenient. Street parking uses the standard Greek system: white lines mean free, blue mean paid. During the evening, finding a spot near restaurants is competitive — local knowledge helps.

Best Day Trips from Kalamata

Kardamili & Stoupa (30-45 minutes west) — The gateway to the Mani peninsula. Kardamili is an elegant stone village with excellent restaurants, while Stoupa has sandy beaches and a more resort feel. The drive along the coast is stunning — turquoise water on one side, olive groves on the other.

Areopoli & the Deep Mani (1 hour southwest) — Tower houses, Byzantine churches, and a landscape that feels like another world. The further south you go, the wilder it gets. The Diros Caves, accessed by boat, are an underground lake system unlike anything else in Greece.

Mystras (45 minutes north) — A UNESCO World Heritage site — a Byzantine city frozen in time. Climb to the fortress for panoramic views. The drive through olive groves and hills is beautiful. Combine with Sparta for a full day.

Methoni Castle (50 minutes southwest) — A Venetian fortress stretching into the sea. One of the most photogenic castles in Greece. The nearby beach at Methoni is also excellent. Stop at Pylos on the way back for another castle and excellent seafood.

Driving Tips for Greece

Peloponnese roads are some of the best in Greece — many have been recently upgraded. The main highways are smooth and well-marked. Mountain roads into the Mani are narrower and more winding, but still in good condition. Take corners slowly, and don’t be surprised by goats or sheep crossing unexpectedly.

Greek drivers use their horns frequently — it’s communication, not aggression. A flash of headlights means someone is giving way to you. Speed limits are posted but locals often exceed them. Police checks happen regularly on the roads out of Kalamata, especially in summer.

Fuel is cheaper in cities than remote areas. Fill up in Kalamata before heading deep into the Mani — some villages only have small pumps with limited hours. Most accept cards, but cash is safer in rural areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a car in Kalamata?
For the city itself, no. But for the Mani, Mystras, Methoni, and the best beaches — absolutely. Public transport exists but runs on infrequent schedules that don’t fit well with day trips.

How long does it take to drive around the Mani?
The full loop from Kalamata to Areopoli, down to Cape Matapan, and back via Gytheio takes about 5-6 hours driving time. Plan a full day with stops.

Is Kalamata airport open year-round?
Mostly seasonal, with flights from April to October. In winter, drive from Athens (about 3 hours) or take the bus. Many rental companies have offices in both cities if you’re continuing your trip.
