Car Hire Marsaskala | From €13/day | 365 Car Hire

Marsaskala (pronounced Mars-a-ska-la) is what Mdina was before tourism — a real Maltese town where locals live, work, and eat. The fishing boats in the harbour still go out daily, the restaurants serve the catch, and the promenade fills with families in the evening. It’s away from the Sliema-St Julian’s corridor, which means fewer crowds and better prices. A hire car here puts you 15 minutes from Valletta, close to St Thomas Bay’s beaches, and perfectly positioned for the southeast coast’s hidden coves.

Getting Around Marsaskala by Car

Marsaskala is small and walkable — you can stroll the entire seafront in 20 minutes. But to see Malta properly, you need wheels. Car rental options are more limited than in tourist hubs, but a few offices exist, and prices can be better. Alternatively, rent in Valletta or the airport (25 minutes away) and drive to Marsaskala.

Driving from Marsaskala is straightforward. You’re on the southeast coast, away from the main traffic. Roads to Valletta and the Three Cities are good. The drive north to the beaches takes 30-35 minutes. Marsaxlokk, the famous fishing village, is 10 minutes south.

Parking in Marsaskala is easy compared to Sliema and St Julian’s. Free spots exist along the seafront and in residential streets. You won’t circle for 30 minutes like in the tourist zones.

Best Day Trips from Marsaskala

St Thomas Bay (5 minutes walk or drive) — Marsaskala’s beach. Rocky in parts, sandy in others, and never as crowded as the northern beaches. Good swimming, local restaurants nearby, and the kind of place where families set up for the whole day.

Marsaxlokk (10 minutes south) — Malta’s fishing village, famous for the Sunday fish market and colourful luzzu boats. Go early Sunday for the market, or any day for the restaurants. The best seafood on the island.

Blue Grotto & Wied iz-Zurrieq (15 minutes south) — Boat trips to the sea caves, swimming from the rocks, and dramatic coastal scenery. Go in the morning for the best light on the caves.

Valletta (15 minutes north) — The capital. Park at Floriana and walk in, or take the ferry from Sliema. A full day of history, architecture, and harbour views. The Three Cities across the water are quieter and equally interesting.

Mdina & Rabat (25 minutes west) — The Silent City. Walk the medieval streets, visit the catacombs in Rabat, and eat in a courtyard restaurant. A different pace from coastal Malta.

Driving Tips for Malta

Malta drives on the left. The southeast coast has lighter traffic than the tourist zones, making it easier for nervous drivers. Roads are generally good, though some village streets are narrow. Take corners slowly and expect parked cars around every bend.

Speed limits are 50 km/h in towns. Enforcement is light but increasing, with speed cameras on main roads. Marsaskala’s streets are quiet, so speeding isn’t really an option anyway. Watch for pedestrians — the promenade is popular for evening walks.

Parking is free in most of Marsaskala. The seafront has some time-limited zones (check signs), but residential streets have unrestricted parking. This is a major advantage over tourist hubs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Marsaskala too far from the action?
Not at all. Valletta is 15 minutes, Sliema is 20. You’re closer to authentic Malta while still being within easy reach of everything. And you’ll save money on accommodation and food.

Can I swim in Marsaskala?
Yes — St Thomas Bay has swimming areas. Not as famous as Golden Bay, but quieter and more local. For sandy beaches, drive north to Mellieha or Golden Bay (30-35 minutes).

How far is the airport?
25 minutes by car. Easy drive on main roads. Some rental companies will deliver to Marsaskala for a fee.
