Car Hire St Julian’s | From €14/day | 365 Car Hire

St Julian’s is where Malta parties — Paceville is the club district, and the bars and casinos stay open until the early hours. But there’s more to St Julian’s than hangovers. The Spinola Bay waterfront has excellent restaurants, the promenade connects to Sliema for long walks, and you’re minutes from the beaches. A hire car here means you can recover on a beach at Golden Bay, explore Mdina’s quiet streets, or drive to Gozo for a completely different pace — all while sleeping in the heart of the action.

Getting Around St Julian’s by Car

St Julian’s is compact but congested. The main streets are narrow and packed with parked cars. Paceville itself is pedestrianised after dark. The smart move: pick up your car on the edge of town (many rental offices are near the hotels), drive out to explore, and return late when traffic eases.

Parking is the biggest challenge. Free parking in St Julian’s barely exists. Budget for paid car parks or hotel parking (€5-15 per day). Street parking with blue lines requires payment apps or machines — not worth the hassle when lots are nearby.

From St Julian’s, you’re well-positioned. Sliema’s promenade is a 15-minute walk or 5-minute drive. Valletta is 20 minutes by car or 15 by ferry from Sliema. Northern beaches are 25-35 minutes. Mdina is 20 minutes. Gozo is 45 minutes to the ferry.

Best Day Trips from St Julian’s

Golden Bay & Ghajn Tuffieha (25 minutes north) — Two of Malta’s best beaches, side by side. Golden Bay has facilities; Ghajn Tuffieha is wilder. Cliffs frame both. Arrive early — parking fills by 10 AM in summer.

Mdina & Rabat (20 minutes west) — The Silent City, a walled medieval town frozen in time. Walk the narrow streets, visit the cathedral, and eat in hidden courtyards. Rabat has Roman catacombs and excellent local food.

Blue Grotto (35 minutes south) — Malta’s most famous sea caves, accessible by boat. Best viewed in morning light. Combine with Marsaxlokk fish market (Sunday mornings) for a full day.

Gozo (ferry from Cirkewwa, 45 minutes drive) — A different Malta — quieter, greener, more traditional. The ferry runs every 45 minutes. Rent on Malta and take the car across (check your agreement allows it). Gozo’s highlights: Victoria Citadel, Ramla Bay, and the Inland Sea.

Driving Tips for Malta

Malta drives on the left. The area around St Julian’s has some of the island’s busiest roads — expect traffic at rush hours and during summer evenings. The coastal road north to the beaches is wider and faster. Inland roads to Mdina are more scenic but narrower.

Speed limits are low (50 km/h in towns), but enforcement is increasing. Speed cameras are common on main roads. Drink-driving limits are strict — 0.5‰ blood alcohol. If you’ve been drinking in Paceville, don’t drive. Taxis are cheap and everywhere.

Parking in St Julian’s centre is almost entirely paid. Most hotels have parking for guests. If your hotel doesn’t, use the car parks near the Dragonara Casino or along the main road — expect €5-15 per day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a car in St Julian’s?
For nightlife and Sliema/Valletta, no — walk and ferry. For beaches, Gozo, and exploring the island, yes. A 2-3 day rental covers the main attractions.

Is it safe to drive after Paceville nightlife?
Don’t. Malta’s drink-driving limit is low, and police do checkpoints. Taxis are cheap and run all night. Your hotel is probably walkable anyway.

How early should I get to beaches?
By 9 AM for Golden Bay and Ghajn Tuffieha in July-August. Popular beaches have limited parking and fill fast.
