Car Hire Milan Linate Airport — Closest Airport to the City Centre

Milan Linate Airport (LIN) is Milan’s city airport — just 8 km from the Duomo, making it the closest airport to the city centre. While smaller than Malpensa, Linate handles mainly domestic and European flights, making it popular with business travellers and those connecting from within Italy. For car rental, Linate is ideal if you’re staying in Milan or heading to nearby Lake Como. You’re minutes from the A51 ring road and the motorway network.

The airport has a single terminal handling about 10 million passengers annually. It’s compact — you’ll be through arrivals and at the car rental counter faster than at any other Milan airport. If your destination is Lake Como, Bergamo, or points north, Linate puts you on the road quicker than Malpensa.

Picking Up Your Rental Car at Milan Linate Airport

Car rental counters are in the arrival hall. Major providers include Sixt, Europcar, Hertz, Avis, Budget, and local companies like Maggiore and Locauto. Most counters are open 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM, with some offering extended hours. Follow “Autonoleggio” signs from baggage claim. The pickup garage is adjacent to the terminal — a short walk.

Vehicle return is in the same location. Follow “Restituzione Autonoleggio” signs as you approach the airport. Fuel stations are located on Viale dell’Aviazione near the airport. Fill up before returning to avoid surcharges.

Documentation: valid driving licence (International Driving Permit recommended for non-EU licences), passport or ID card, and credit card for deposit (€500-1,500). Linate handles mainly European travellers. Photograph your vehicle before leaving.

Lake Garda (1.5 hours) — East on the A4. Sirmione, Desenzano, and lakeside towns. Popular in summer.

Tips for Driving in Italy

Linate connects to the A51 ring road, which links to the A1 (south to Bologna, Florence, Rome), A4 (east to Bergamo, Venice, west to Turin), and A8/A9 (north to Como and Switzerland). Speed limits are 50 km/h in cities, 90 km/h on rural roads, and 130 km/h on motorways. Italian drivers are aggressive — stay right except when overtaking.

Italian motorways are toll roads. Expect €10-25 for medium journeys. Credit cards are accepted. Fuel is cheaper at supermarkets than on autostrade.

Milan has Area C (congestion charge) and ZTL zones in the centre. Do NOT drive into the centre. Use the ring road and park outside.
