Car Hire Venice — Beyond the Canals to Veneto’s Treasures

Venice needs no introduction. St. Mark’s Square, the Grand Canal, Rialto Bridge — the world’s most unique city floats on water. But here’s what most tourists miss: Venice is just the beginning. The Veneto region offers Palladian villas, Prosecco hills, Dolomite mountains, and cities like Verona and Padua. A rental car here transforms a Venice trip into a Veneto adventure. Since cars can’t enter Venice proper, you’ll pick up in Mestre (the mainland) or at Marco Polo Airport and use Venice as your base for regional exploration.

Venice proper (Venezia) is car-free. The historic centre is accessible only by boat. But mainland Mestre, where most rental locations are, has excellent connections to the A4 and A27 motorways. Within 30 minutes, you can be in Padua. Within an hour, Verona or the Dolomites. The key is picking up on the mainland and treating Venice as a day trip from your Mestre or airport base.

Picking Up Your Rental Car in Venice

City pickup locations are in Mestre (the mainland area), near Mestre Station, and at Piazzale Roma (the car terminal at the edge of Venice). Most offices open Monday through Saturday, 8 AM to 6 PM, with limited Sunday hours. Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) is 12 km from Venice and offers longer hours — consider airport pickup for convenience. If you’re staying in Mestre, you can walk to rental locations. If staying in Venice, take the bus or tram to Mestre to pick up.

Documentation: valid driving licence (International Driving Permit recommended for non-EU licences), passport or ID card, and credit card for deposit (€500-1,500). Italian rental companies inspect vehicles carefully. Photograph your car before driving off.

Where to Go with Your Rental Car from Venice

Padua (30 minutes) — West on the A4. The Scrovegni Chapel (Giotto frescoes) and Basilica of St. Anthony. A beautiful city often overlooked by tourists.

Verona (1 hour) — West on the A4. Juliet’s balcony, Roman arena, and charming centre. Shakespeare made it famous, but the city is genuinely beautiful.

Dolomites (1.5 hours) — North on the A27. Stunning alpine scenery, hiking, and skiing. Cortina d’Ampezzo is the most famous resort.

Prosecco Hills (1 hour) — North on the A27. Vineyards, tastings, and scenic drives. UNESCO World Heritage landscape.

Treviso (30 minutes) — North on the A27. Charming walled city with canals (less crowded than Venice). Tiramisu was invented here.

Tips for Driving in Italy

Mestre connects to the A4 (east-west, Milan to Trieste) and A27 (north to the Dolomites). Speed limits are 50 km/h in cities, 90 km/h on rural roads, and 130 km/h on motorways (110 km/h in rain). Italian drivers are aggressive — stay right except when overtaking.

Italian motorways are toll roads. The A4 from Venice to Verona costs about €8. Credit cards are accepted. Fuel is cheaper at supermarkets than on autostrade.

Venice has no cars. Mestre and mainland areas have normal parking. If you must drive close to Venice, Piazzale Roma has parking garages (€25-30/day). Better to park in Mestre and take the bus or tram.

Use the search above to compare Venice car hire prices. Whether you’re exploring the Dolomites or heading to Verona, a rental car gives you freedom to discover Veneto.
