Car Hire Hervey Bay Airport Queensland | Cheap Hervey Bay Rental Cars

Hervey Bay sits on the Queensland coast about 300km north of Brisbane. It’s famous as the gateway to Fraser Island (K’gari), the world’s largest sand island, and as Australia’s whale watching capital. The city has a small but growing airport with flights from Brisbane and other Queensland cities. The town itself is pleasant and relaxed, with a long waterfront promenade and plenty of cafes and restaurants.
Hervey Bay is quite spread out, and a car makes getting around much easier. More importantly, you’ll need a vehicle to properly explore the region. The main reason most people come here is Fraser Island, and while you can take tours, having your own 4WD gives you much more freedom to explore the island’s lakes, forests and beach at your own pace. The surrounding mainland also has national parks and beach towns worth visiting.
Fraser Island (K’gari) is the obvious highlight. It’s a World Heritage-listed sand island with ancient rainforests growing on sand, crystal-clear freshwater lakes, and the famous 75 Mile Beach which serves as a highway. You need a 4WD to explore properly – hire one on the island or bring your own (the ferry allows vehicles with a permit). Key spots include Lake McKenzie, the Maheno shipwreck, the coloured sands at The Cathedrals, and Eli Creek.

Hervey Bay itself is worth exploring. The Esplanade has a long walking and cycling path, and the Urangan Pier extends 868 metres into the bay – one of the longest in Australia. The Marina has restaurants and boats offering whale watching cruises.

Hervey Bay is famous for humpback whales. Between July and November, these magnificent creatures gather in the sheltered waters of the bay. Whale watching cruises are popular and often guarantee sightings. The bay is also a gateway to the Great Sandy National Park on the mainland.
Hervey Bay Airport is about 10km from the town centre. To get to Fraser Island, drive to River Heads (about 20 minutes from town) where the ferry departs. The ferry crossing takes 50 minutes and you’ll need to book ahead during school holidays. On Fraser Island, all roads are sandy or unsealed – a 4WD is essential. Drive on the beach at low tide and watch for tidal changes. Speed limits are 30km/h on most tracks, 80km/h on 75 Mile Beach.
Book your car early if visiting during Queensland school holidays or whale watching season (July-November). If you plan to take your own vehicle to Fraser Island, book the ferry well in advance and ensure your rental agreement allows sand driving. Some rental companies prohibit taking vehicles on beaches, so check carefully. Hiring a 4WD on Fraser Island is often easier than bringing your own.
