Port Macquarie sits on the mid-north coast of New South Wales, about 4 hours’ drive north of Sydney. It’s a pleasant regional town with a lovely harbour, good beaches, and enough attractions to fill a few days. The airport has scheduled flights from Sydney and other cities, and car rental desks are conveniently located in the terminal. It’s a more relaxed alternative to the busier Coffs Harbour and makes a good base for exploring this stretch of coast.
Port Macquarie itself is fairly compact and much of it is walkable, but having a car lets you explore beyond the town. The surrounding area has beaches, national parks, and the excellent koala hospital that’s become one of the town’s signature attractions. You can easily do a day trip to the surrounding hinterland or continue up the coast to places like Crescent Head and the Camden Haven River.
The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital is a must-visit. It’s a working rehabilitation facility where you can see koalas being treated and learn about the challenges facing these iconic animals. The hospital is open to the public and there’s no booking required – just turn up during opening hours.
Town Beach and Shelly Beach are the main swimming spots. The Town Beach breakwater has a safe swimming area and the area has a good cafe scene. The coastal walk from Town Beach to Lighthouse Beach passes through some nice scenery and is popular with locals.
Sea Acres Rainforest is just outside town and is one of the few coastal rainforests in NSW. The boardwalk through the canopy is accessible and gives a good introduction to the area’s vegetation. The nearby North Shore beach is a locals’ favourite for surfing.
Port Macquarie is on the Pacific Highway (M1), about 4 hours from Sydney and 1.5 hours from Coffs Harbour. The airport is about 5km from the town centre. Roads in the area are generally good – the main highways are sealed and well-maintained. Watch for wildlife on roads, particularly at dawn and dusk.
Car rental desks are in the Port Macquarie Airport terminal. Booking ahead is recommended during school holidays and Easter when the town fills with families. Consider whether you need a 4WD – most attractions are accessible with a standard vehicle, but some of the more remote beaches require care on sandy or unsealed access roads.
