Rockhampton is a city in central Queensland that proudly calls itself the beef capital of Australia. It’s situated on the Fitzroy River about 40km from the coast and serves as a gateway to the Capricorn Coast. The city has a small airport with flights from Brisbane and major Queensland cities, making it a convenient entry point for exploring this less-visited part of the state. The nearby beach town of Yeppoon is popular with families and has a more relaxed vibe than the busy tourist centres further north.
Rockhampton is quite spread out, and having a car makes getting around much easier. More importantly, the surrounding region has plenty to offer that you’d miss without wheels. The Capricorn Coast beaches around Yeppoon are only 40 minutes away, while the inland areas toward Carnarvon Gorge offer stunning sandstone landscapes and excellent bushwalking. Without a car, you’d be limited to what’s in Rockhampton itself.
Rockhampton’s city centre has some nice heritage buildings, particularly around the corner of Quay and William Streets. The Rockhampton Botanic Gardens are worth a wander, and the city’s art gallery has a reasonable collection. The Fitzroy River has a riverside walk that’s pleasant in the evening.
Yeppoon is the obvious coastal escape. The main beach is safe for swimming and there’s a good cafe scene along the waterfront. From here you can catch a ferry to the Keppel Islands, which are part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Great Keppel Island has beaches, walking tracks and snorkelling.
Carnarvon Gorge is a 3-hour drive inland but is worth the trip for its spectacular sandstone walls, ancient Aboriginal rock art and crystal-clear creeks. It’s one of Queensland’s most beautiful natural attractions but requires some dedication to reach.
Rockhampton Airport is about 10km south of the city centre. The drive to Yeppoon takes about 40 minutes via the scenic coastal road. The road to Carnarvon Gorge is mostly sealed but involves some winding mountain roads – allow plenty of time and fill up with fuel in Rolleston or Injune before heading into the gorge. Roads can be closed after heavy rain, especially in summer.
Car rental desks are available at Rockhampton Airport. Book ahead during school holidays and around the Beef Australia expo (held every three years in May). Consider whether you need a 4WD – standard vehicles are fine for Yeppoon and the coast, but a 4WD is needed if you’re planning to explore remote beaches or head to Carnarvon Gorge after rain.
