Sofia Airport Arrival and First-Drive Guide
Arriving at Sofia Airport is easier when the first journey is planned before landing. Check your flight terminal, the address of your first overnight stop and whether you need a car that day. This guide covers arrival and first-drive decisions; use our Sofia Airport car hire comparison page for rental offers, collection conditions and booking.

Decide how to leave Sofia Airport
A central Sofia stay does not automatically require airport car collection. The airport metro station is beside Terminal 2, providing an alternative for travellers starting in the city. If your flight uses a different terminal, check the current airport transfer instructions rather than assuming you can walk straight to the station. Driving on arrival makes more sense when your accommodation or next stage lies beyond the city.
Find the right terminal and handover point
Check the arrival terminal shown for your flight, then match it to the supplier’s written instructions. For example, Enterprise lists its Sofia Airport counter in the Terminal 2 arrivals hall; this does not establish where another supplier will meet you. A desk, representative meeting point and shuttle collection are different arrangements. Save the telephone number and delayed-flight procedure before departure.
Have the collection documents ready
If you have booked a car, read the selected offer’s licence, identification, payment-card and deposit requirements before travelling. Check whether a translation or International Driving Permit is needed for your licence and circumstances. Bring the booking confirmation and required original documents; do not assume a phone photograph or a different driver’s card will be accepted.
Set up the car before leaving
Record existing damage and ask for missing marks to be added to the handover record. Check the documented fuel or charge level, lights, controls and emergency contact. Adjust the seat and mirrors and enter the first destination while parked. Ask how the return works before leaving the collection area.
Plan the first stop, not just the airport exit
Use the actual accommodation entrance or agreed parking location as your first destination. A city-centre property, an outer-suburb hotel and a direct regional drive can require different approaches. Review a current route for traffic, closures and access restrictions rather than relying on a fixed airport-to-city driving time. If tired after the flight, take a break before a longer stage.
Match the car and equipment to the journey
Choose usable space for every passenger and bag, then check the transmission and equipment in the selected offer. Mountain or winter travel needs a current weather and road check and confirmation of suitable equipment. An SUV badge does not grant permission for unsealed, restricted or closed roads. Split a long arrival-day drive when daylight, weather or fatigue makes that sensible.
Check the vehicle’s Bulgarian road-use entitlement
Ask the supplier how the vehicle’s road-use entitlement is handled for the roads you intend to use. The official BG Toll entitlement check uses the registration details; confirm the plate and registration country with the supplier. A lookup does not replace the rental terms or establish coverage for every vehicle and road. Check before buying anything separately so you do not duplicate an existing entitlement.
Save the return instructions on arrival
Save the precise vehicle-return entrance, not only the terminal address. Confirm fuel or charge requirements, inspection arrangements and what happens if the office is closed. Work backwards from the airline’s own check-in requirements, allowing for the drive, vehicle handover and any transfer. Keep the return record; deposit release follows the supplier’s and card provider’s processes, not a guaranteed number of days.
Separate cross-border plans from local driving
A journey into another country needs explicit supplier approval for every destination, permitted vehicle category and return point. Check documents, cover, assistance and any charge before booking. Do not infer border permission from Bulgaria’s proximity to a neighbour or from an unrestricted-looking road route.
Continue beyond Sofia when the itinerary needs it
Keep the arrival day manageable, then plan the wider route around your overnight stops. Drive on the right in Bulgaria and use headlights during the day. Allow for changing mountain conditions, breaks and parking at the destination. If the first nights are in the capital, a later city collection may be more useful than keeping a rental parked.
