Car Hire Townsville Airport Queensland | Cheap Townsville Rental Cars

Townsville sits on the Queensland coast roughly halfway between Cairns and Airlie Beach, making it a convenient gateway to northern Queensland attractions. The airport is a short drive from the city centre and has all the major car rental companies represented. What makes Townsville special is that it combines beach access with city conveniences, plus easy connections to Magnetic Island and the inland rainforests of the Paluma Range.
Townsville is often overlooked by tourists heading to Cairns or the Whitsundays, which is a shame because the area has plenty to offer. Having a car lets you explore Magnetic Island (which has limited public transport), drive to the Paluma Range national parks, and visit the beach towns north of Townsville. The city itself is spread out, so a car makes getting around much easier than relying on buses.
Magnetic Island is the obvious highlight. Just 20 minutes by ferry from Townsville, it’s a large island with 25 beaches and coves, a national park covering most of its interior, and a population of koalas that you’re reasonably likely to spot in the wild. You can take your car on the ferry ($75 return) or rent one on the island.

The Strand is Townsville’s waterfront promenade, a 2km stretch with restaurants, cafes, and a swimming lagoon. It’s where locals go to relax. The nearby Reef Aquarium gives a good introduction to the Great Barrier Reef marine life.

Inland, the Paluma Range is part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. The township of Paluma sits at 900m altitude and is noticeably cooler than the coast. There are several walking tracks through the rainforest, including the Crystal Creek Falls trail.
Driving in Townsville is straightforward – roads are wide and well-signed. The Bruce Highway runs through the city, connecting you north to Cairns (650km) and south to Airlie Beach (280km). Be aware that tropical weather can bring sudden heavy rain, especially during the wet season (November-May). If driving to Magnetic Island, book your vehicle on the ferry early as spaces are limited.
Townsville Airport has good car rental availability, but booking ahead is still recommended during school holidays. Consider whether you need a 4WD – most sealed roads are fine with a standard vehicle, but if you’re planning to explore remote beaches or go off-road, a 4WD is worth the extra cost. Compare prices between on-airport and off-airport locations, as off-airport can sometimes be cheaper.
