Car Hire Menorca Airport — Essential for Exploring the Island’s Beaches

Menorca Airport (MAH) sits just 5km southwest of Mahón, making it one of the most convenient airports for car hire in Spain. But convenience isn’t why you need a car here—it’s necessity. Menorca’s 100+ beaches and coves are scattered around the island’s perimeter, and public transport reaches only a fraction of them. The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status has preserved a landscape of pristine beaches that can only be discovered by private vehicle.

From the airport, you can drive to any point on the island within 45 minutes. The white-sand calas of the south coast, the wilder beaches of the north, the prehistoric monuments scattered across the countryside—all are accessible. A rental car transforms a standard beach holiday into a comprehensive exploration of one of the Mediterranean’s best-preserved islands.

Picking Up Your Rental Car at Menorca Airport

Rental desks are located in the arrivals hall. All major international companies and local specialists operate here. Summer demand is extreme—book months ahead for July-August.

Most companies have vehicles in adjacent parking within walking distance of the terminal.

Required documents: Valid driving licence, passport or ID, and credit card. EU licence holders don’t need an International Driving Permit; non-EU visitors should check requirements.

Seasonal note: Menorca is popular with families. Car availability can be limited in peak season. Compact cars are recommended—small roads to beaches are easier to navigate.

Driving from Menorca Airport

The airport connects directly to the ME-1, the main road running between Mahón and Ciutadella. For Mahón, head east (about 10 minutes). For Ciutadella, head west (about 45 minutes). For south coast calas, head west then south. For north coast beaches, head west then north.

Top Destinations from Menorca Airport

Mahón (Maó) (5km, 10min)

The capital with one of the world’s largest natural harbours. British-influenced architecture, excellent restaurants, and the Xoriguer gin distillery. A good base for the first night.

Ciutadella (45km, 45min)

The former capital with a beautiful old town and charming port. Very different atmosphere from Mahón. Medieval architecture and narrow streets.

Cala Macarella and Cala Mitjana (25km, 35min)

Two of the most beautiful calas—white sand and turquoise water in protected settings. Parking fills by 10am in peak season. Walk between them along coastal paths.

Playa de Cavallería (30km, 40min)

A wild north coast beach with darker sand and fewer crowds. Beautiful walking trails and dramatic cliffs. Very different from the south coast calas.

Calas of the South Coast

Cala en Turqueta, Cala Escorxada, Cala Trebalúger—each offers white sand and crystal water. Some require walking from parking areas. Arrive early in peak season.

Tips for Driving in Menorca

Roads: The ME-1 main road is excellent. Roads to beaches can be narrow. Some beach access requires unpaved roads—check your rental agreement.

Speed limits: 50km/h urban, 80km/h open roads. The island is small—you’ll rarely drive fast.

Parking: Beach parking fills by mid-morning in July-August. Arrive before 10am at popular calas, or visit late afternoon.

Fuel: Stations are in Mahón, Ciutadella, and a few other towns. Fill up before heading to remote beaches.

Seasonal fees: Many beach car parks charge in summer. Carry cash.
