NAPLES CITY RENTAL CARS

Car Hire in Naples — City, Coast and Beyond

Naples is one of Italy's most intense cities — chaotic streets, world-class pizza, and views of Vesuvius that remind you of its volatile history. It is also the gateway to southern Italy's most celebrated coastline. A rental car lets you use Naples as a base for the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, Caserta and the inland hills, while skipping the city's notorious traffic when you need to.

City centre pickup locations sit near Napoli Centrale station and around the port area. Most open Monday through Saturday with limited Sunday service. If your plans involve leaving the city quickly, consider Naples Airport (NAP) instead — it is a short distance from the centre and offers longer desk hours. Parking in central Naples is extremely difficult, so factor in garage costs or choose accommodation outside the ZTL zones.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT PICKUP

Match collection to the actual itinerary

Include transfers, parking days, opening hours and return timing when comparing the two options.

OPTION ONE

City Centre or Airport Pickup?

City branches suit travellers staying in Naples for a few days before collecting a car. Airport pickup is better if you want to leave the city immediately. Central Naples traffic is aggressive and parking is nearly impossible, so airport collection is usually less stressful for first-time visitors.

OPTION TWO

Do You Need a Car for the Whole Trip?

If you are spending several days in Naples itself, you may not want a car. The historic centre, Spaccanapoli and the waterfront are best explored on foot. Consider picking up the car only when you are ready to leave the city for the coast or inland. This avoids parking fees and ZTL stress.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Plan the handover, price and first drive

Naples is not a city you ease into. You arrive, you step onto the street, and the noise hits you — scooters, shouting, the clatter of espresso cups. But within that chaos is a city with more soul than most of Italy put together. The pizza is the best in the world. The coffee is dark and fast. The people talk with their hands and mean every word.

A rental car here is not for driving in the city. It is for escaping it. For the moment when you have eaten your fill of sfogliatelle and seen enough churches, and you are ready for the coast. You collect the car, join the motorway, and suddenly Vesuvius is on your left and the sea is on your right.

The drive to Sorrento is your first lesson in Campanian roads. Tunnels, bends, sudden views of the bay. Then the Amalfi Coast road, where every corner reveals another impossible scene — a village clinging to a cliff, a beach far below, a lemon grove smelling of summer. By the time you reach Positano, you understand why people come back.

Back in Naples for your last night, you return the car and walk through Spaccanapoli one more time. The city has not changed, but you have. You have seen what lies beyond the chaos — the coast, the ruins, the mountains, the vineyards. And you have seen it on your own terms, which is exactly why you hired the car in the first place.

COMPARE THE CONTRACT

Check the conditions behind the price

The selected supplier’s terms and booking voucher control the rental. Review them before payment and again before collection.

Total payable price

Compare the full payable amount and inclusions rather than an unsupported daily-price promise.

Deposit and payment card

Confirm the deposit, accepted card type and whose name must appear on the card.

Excess and cover

Read the renter's liability, exclusions and what any optional protection actually changes.

Fuel policy

Know the collection level, return requirement and whether a refuelling charge can apply.

Mileage and territory

Check any distance limit and where the vehicle may be driven.

Extras and return

Price additional drivers, seats, after-hours service and one-way return before payment.

VEHICLE CHOICE

Choose for people, bags and roads

A category normally represents a group of similar cars, not a promise of one exact model.

  • Compact: convenient for couples and tighter parking.
  • Intermediate: more room for bags and longer journeys.
  • Family or SUV category: useful only when the required capacity justifies it.
  • Transmission: select automatic explicitly if manual is unsuitable.
ON THE ROAD

Practical planning before departure

Documentation

Bring your valid driving licence, passport or ID card, and a credit card in the lead driver's name. Non-EU licences often need an International Driving Permit. Check the supplier's exact requirements before booking.

Vehicle Inspection

Italian rental companies inspect cars carefully. Photograph every panel, the wheels, the windscreen and the interior before driving off. Note any damage on the agreement. This protects you when you return the car.

Fuel Policy

Full-to-full is standard. You receive the car with a full tank and return it full. Keep the last fuel receipt. Pre-purchase fuel options are rarely economical for short stays.

Parking Strategy

Garages in central Naples charge daily rates that add up quickly. Hotels outside the ZTL often include parking. If you must drive into the centre, ask your hotel to register your licence plate for ZTL access.

When to Book

Spring through autumn is peak season. Compare early, especially for automatic transmissions or larger categories. The available rental options and availability go first.

ROUTE IDEAS

Build a realistic first journey

To Pompeii and Herculaneum

Take the A3 motorway south-east toward Salerno. The Pompeii exit is clearly signed. Herculaneum is the next exit. Both sites have dedicated parking. Allow extra time for traffic near the exits, especially on weekends.

To the Amalfi Coast

Join the A3 south to Castellammare di Stabia, then follow the SS145 toward Sorrento. From Sorrento, the SS163 winds along the coast to Positano and Amalfi. The road is narrow and spectacular. In summer, traffic is heavy and parking is limited. An early start helps.

To the Royal Palace of Caserta

Head north on the A1 toward Rome. Caserta is a short drive. The palace and gardens are vast — one of Europe's largest royal residences. Combine with a visit to Caserta Vecchia, a medieval village perched above the modern town.

To Mount Vesuvius

Drive east on the A3, then follow signs for Vesuvius. The road climbs partway; from there you hike to the crater rim. The views over Naples and the bay are worth the effort. Check opening times in advance, as access varies by season.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Where are the car hire offices in Naples city?

Offices are clustered near Napoli Centrale railway station and around the port. Some are inside hotels or mixed-use buildings. Your booking voucher gives the exact address and any special instructions. Read it before you travel.

Can I drive into Naples historic centre?

Only if your hotel registers your licence plate for ZTL access. The ZTL is camera-enforced and fines are automatic. If your accommodation is inside the ZTL, contact them in advance. Otherwise, park outside and walk or use public transport.

Is an International Driving Permit required?

EU photocard licences are usually accepted. Travellers from outside the EU should check whether their home licence is valid in Italy or whether an International Driving Permit is needed. The supplier's terms will state the exact requirement.

What is the best base for exploring the Amalfi Coast?

Sorrento is the most practical base — good ferry connections, decent parking and easy access to the coast road. Positano and Amalfi are beautiful but parking is extremely limited. Staying slightly inland in Piano di Sorrento or Meta can be easier.

Should I book an automatic car?

If you are not confident with manual transmission, book an automatic well in advance. Automatics are less common in Italy and sell out quickly, especially in peak season. Do not assume you can upgrade at the desk.
