What to See and Do in Durres
Roman Amphitheatre
One of the largest Roman amphitheatres in the Balkans, Durres’ amphitheatre was built in the 2nd century AD and could hold up to 15,000 spectators. Remarkably, it was only discovered in the 1960s during construction work – much of it still lies beneath modern buildings. You can explore the underground chambers and climb to the top for views over the city.
Byzantine Forum
Near the amphitheatre, the remains of a Byzantine forum have been excavated. The site includes columns, foundations, and fragments of mosaic, giving insight into Durres’ ancient importance.
The Beach

From Durres, you can drive south along the coast towards Vlora and the Albanian Riviera. The road is good, passing through the resort town of Fier and continuing to the beautiful beaches around Vlora.
