Car Hire in Northern Cyprus: Complete Guide for 2026

Northern Cyprus car hire guide

Choose your pickup before you plan the crossing

Hiring a car for Northern Cyprus takes one extra decision: will you collect it in the government-controlled part of Cyprus, or arrange a separate rental in the north? A car that can reach a crossing is not necessarily permitted, insured or supported on the other side. Resolve those terms before paying for either rental.

If you arrive at Larnaca or Paphos, compare Larnaca car hire or Paphos car hire for the part of the trip covered by the selected offer. The Cyprus car hire guide helps with the wider pickup choice. These are not promises that a southern rental can be driven north.

Can a hire car from the south go north?

Do not assume so. The answer depends on the exact supplier and rental agreement. Hertz Cyprus prohibits taking its cars into the north. Enterprise’s Cyprus rental terms say its vehicle-damage cover and roadside assistance do not apply there. A policy sold near a crossing may address a local insurance requirement, but it does not override a supplier ban or restore the rental company’s damage cover and breakdown service.

Before you reserve

Ask the named supplier whether this particular car may cross, which documents it provides, where each type of cover applies, and what happens after damage or a breakdown in the north. Get the answer in the booking terms or in writing. If permission or protection is unclear, plan separate transport rather than driving across on an assumption.

At collection

Match the agreement to the car and named drivers. Check the deposit and accepted card, excess, fuel and return rules, cancellation conditions and the roadside number. A broker’s general description is not a substitute for the chosen supplier’s terms.

Crossing the Green Line

Use an authorised crossing point. Ledra Street and Ledra Palace in Nicosia are for pedestrians, not cars. Agios Dometios is a vehicle crossing; the Republic of Cyprus also lists other authorised points. Choose the crossing that fits your route and eligibility, and allow time for document and vehicle checks rather than relying on a fixed queue estimate. The current official crossing-point list is useful when planning the route.

Carry the identity and entry documents required for your nationality and itinerary, your valid driving licence if driving, and the rental and insurance papers for the vehicle. Crossing and entry conditions are not identical for every passport holder. In particular, the Pergamos and Strovilia routes through the UK Sovereign Base Area have additional restrictions for some non-EU travellers. Check advice applicable to your passport before selecting one of those crossings.

How you first arrive on the island matters. The Republic of Cyprus does not recognise arrival through Ercan Airport or northern seaports as lawful entry through its ports; this can affect later passage into the government-controlled area or departure. If your itinerary starts in the north, check the Republic’s entry rules and your own government’s travel advice before committing to flights, a ferry or a rental.

Arranging a rental in the north

If the trip is based in Kyrenia, Famagusta or elsewhere in the north, a rental collected there may suit the route better than a southern rental with no north-side protection. Confirm the actual collection and return location directly with the provider, along with licence rules, payment method, deposit, damage excess, insurance territory and breakdown arrangements. Do not assume a car hired in the north can be driven into the government-controlled area.

For collection at Ercan or in Kyrenia, confirm availability and written terms with a provider serving that exact location before making other non-refundable plans. The comparison links below cover southern Cyprus pickup options; they do not establish permission to cross the Green Line.

Driving days in the north

Traffic keeps left. Take care at roundabouts and junctions if you usually drive on the right, and follow posted limits rather than an old guide’s general speed figures. For a longer day towards the Karpaz Peninsula, agree the permitted roads with the supplier and check fuel and return timing before leaving. Do not take a rental off-road unless the agreement expressly allows it.

Kyrenia, Famagusta and the Karpaz Peninsula make quite different day trips. Build the route around the car’s pickup and return location, daylight and the places you most want to see, not a promised drive time. If crossing the Green Line is part of the day, leave extra time for checks on the way back.

Northern Cyprus car hire: common questions

Can I drive a Larnaca rental to Kyrenia?

Only if the selected supplier permits the trip and you have the required documents and cover. Several major suppliers either prohibit it or exclude important protection in the north. Do not rely on crossing-point insurance alone.

Can I drive through Ledra Street?

No. Ledra Street is a pedestrian crossing. Use a designated vehicle crossing if your rental agreement and entry documents allow the trip.

Do I need an International Driving Permit?

That depends on where your licence was issued, its format and the selected supplier’s rules. Check both before travel, and carry the original licence. A rule for UK photocard holders should not be applied to every visitor.

Is cancellation free?

Not automatically. Check the cancellation deadline and conditions for the exact offer before booking, along with deposit and payment terms.

Compare a southern Cyprus pickup

If you arrive through Larnaca or Paphos, compare offers for that part of your trip. Read the selected supplier’s territorial, insurance and cancellation terms before deciding whether a separate north-side rental is needed.
